Increasing Milk Supply
The subject of taking herbs or medications to increase milk supply is very controversial. There are several commonly used herbs and medications currently available. These medications increase milk supply by increasing the level of prolactin. Do not use any of them without discussing the specifics with your medical practitioner or lactation consultant prior to taking them. When discussing them, it is important to let your medical practitioner know of any other herbs, herbal supplements, or medications you are currently taking or have recently taken. This is to ensure the health and safety of both you and your baby. - Herbs – Some of the more common herbs that have been used to help increase milk supply are fenugreek, blessed thistle, and fennel. These can be found at your local health food or breast feeding stores in tea, tincture, or caplet form.
- Medications – If the herbs do not work, talk with your medical practitioner about medications.

Checking Parts on the Breast Pump
Breast pumps work by creating a vacuum which draws the milk out of the breasts. With regular use, the vacuum regulator (valve and/or small removable membrane) on the bottle wears out. When this happens, the pump does not suction properly, even though it is often not noticeable. The body responds to this lower demand by producing less milk (remember, “demand-and-supply” as we’ve mentioned before.)
It is important to check the valve on both bottles every month. If either valve is chipped or cracked, replace it immediately. If your model has removable membranes, replace them every 2-3 months; replace them immediately if they are damaged or torn. Next...
Breast pumps are available for purchase through local nursing/baby stores, pharmacies, hospital gift shops, some lactation consultants, as well as on-line.
Breast Pumping Accessories
There are many breast pumping accessories available, but perhaps the finest, most innovative accessories come from Pumpin' Pal. Not only do they make a simple, inexpensive hands-free breast pumping strap, but also the incredible angled breast shields they call Super Shields Plus. The angled shields will allow most moms to sit back and relax rather than lean forward so the milk will flow into the bottles. When you pair the Super Shields with the hands-free strap, you can type, read, or answer the phone while sitting in a comfortable position!
