Breast Pumping Information
Breast Pump Selection.
Selecting the right pump is very important when considering your individual breast pumping needs and wants. If you will need to breast pump only occasionally, the pump you choose will be different than a mother who will be breast pumping at work on a regular basis, so choose carefully.Getting started.
When going back to work, it is suggested that you start breast pumping a couple of weeks before your return. It may help to nurse the baby on one side while breast pumping on the other in order to get used to it. This will also help alleviate the let down issues and you can build an emergency supply for the future should you not be able to breast pump or breast feed under certain conditions.-
Avoid missing a pump session.
Missing a pumping session can have a negative effect on your milk supply. If you don't have time for a full pumping session, even a short pump session can help keep your milk supply at it's peak. -
Breast-feed when you can.
When possible, continue to nurse. When you are off work, use this time to breast feed and bond with your baby. It will be beneficial to both baby and your milk supply. -
How to Increase Supply.
Try to pump more often rather than spending longer periods of time less often. Try pumping three or four times a day for short intervals rather than two long sessions. Also, pumping both sides at the same time may be helpful. -
Troubleshooting.
Sometimes, breast pumping may seem unnatural and, therefore, let down may not happen. Some moms find viewing photos of your baby while pumping can help. Some breast pump cases will have a slot to add a baby picture. Next...
Breast Pumping Accessories
There are many breast pumping accessories available, but perhaps the finest, most innovative accessories come from Pumpin' Pal. Not only do they make a simple, inexpensive hands-free breast pumping strap, but also the incredible angled breast shields they call Super Shields Plus. The angled shields will allow most moms to sit back and relax rather than lean forward so the milk will flow into the bottles. When you pair the Super Shields with the hands-free strap, you can type, read, or answer the phone while sitting in a comfortable position!
